What are PLU Codes and what do they say about vegetables and fruits?
PLU stands for Price Look-Up. The bar codes or the stickers you see on fresh vegetables and fruits in the supermarket help the cashier ring you up making sure you pay the right amount; it helps the store keep track of their inventory, and it helps you the consumer know how the vegetables and fruits you’re buying where grown:
- conventional, organic or genetically modified (to some extent).
Conventionally grown: has a 4 digit code and it starts with 3 or 4
Organically grown: has a 5 digit code, and it starts with 9
Genetically Modified (GM): has a 5 digit code and it starts with 8. Not having the 5 digit code it doesn’t mean is not GM.
